There are four types of sand paper: aluminum oxide, garnet, silicon carbide and ceramic. Garnet, the second most popular sandpaper, is actually a natural abrasive, and is made of real sand. According to Norfolk, Virginia carpenters, garnet is a good choice for finishing touches because it can seal off a wood’s grain, which allows pigmented stains to penetrate woods more evenly. Silicon carbide is good for cutting harder materials like metal, plastic and fiberglass, but it’s not preferred among Norfolk carpentry contractors because it tends to wear out quickly. Ceramic is the most expensive but it’s also the hardest, and it’s mainly used to shape and level wood.
